A: BaK-4 and BK-7 are types of optical glass. BaK-4 glass provides better light transmission and brighter images. "Twilight factor" is an arbitrary measure that provides some indication of a binoculars low-light performance. It's simply the square root of the binoculars magnification multiplied by its objective lens diameter. A value (or "twilight factor") of 17 is considered the threshold for decent low-light performance. Higher values are better. Twilight factor alone, though, isn't a true measure of low-light performance. The type of optical glass used and optical coatings make a great deal of difference. Good coatings can allow binoculars with a twilight factor of, say, 17 to outperform those with a twilight factor a whole number or more higher.
