Bird Seed for Bird Feeders

If you're a bird enthusiast, you probably already know that different types of bird seed are suited to different species of birds. Choosing the right bird feeders and seed for the species in your area ensures that your feathered friends stay well fed, and that they'll come back to visit your yard for many seasons to come.

Seeds and Birdfeeders
The list below shows some common bird seeds and what species they will attract, as well as what types of squirrel proof bird feeders work best for those species. Choose your squirrel proof bird feeder based on where you live and what types of birds are most common in your area:

  • Sunflower Seeds are ideal for finches, bluejays, cardinals, chickadees, doves and sparrows. Almost any type of hanging bird feeder can hold sunflower seeds; just make sure to hang it fairly high off the ground. You should also choose a birdfeeder that offers some sort of protection against squirrels, since they love to snack on sunflower seeds too.
  • Corn is a popular bird seed for cardinals, blackbirds, and starlings. Most larger song birds (and some smaller ones, too) enjoy corn, so hang a corn feeder high off the ground with plenty of room around it for the birds to congregate. Provide perches or platforms at varying heights so that several birds can feed at the same time. Mesh and wire caged feeders are ideal for corn, as they keep squirrels and other unwanted feeders at bay.
  • Suet is a type of animal fat that attracts woodpeckers, chickadees and titmice. Suet is sold in cakes or bars, and should be placed in a special suet bird feeder for best results.

Remember to keep your bird feeders clean, and remove old seed shells and leftover seeds from the bird feeder periodically. Clean up spilled seed to keep rodents away, and make sure that the bird feeder gets washed with a soap solution or bleach and water on a regular basis to avoid mold and mildew. Taking care of your bird feeder and providing the proper feed will ensure a happy feeding experience for you and the birds.
